Yonex updates the midsize model of its VCORE series with some extra speed and spin while managing to keep the surgical precision and great ball feedback of the previous generation. Named the VCORE 95, this stick should appeal to strong intermediates and advanced players who want the unmistakeable control and “connected feel” that comes with a compact head and thin beam (20-21mm).

Although this stick is lighter and faster than a traditional player’s racket, it still feels quite solid at impact.  With this update, Yonex reduces wind drag by expanding the location of the Aero Fin grooves to include the lower portion of the head. This technology is complemented by an Aero Trench grommet system that submerges the grommets to further reduce wind resistance. 

The upshot of these technologies is easier acceleration, which will help you load the ball with more pace and spin. The VCORE 95 also gets updated with a material called Namd, which is uniquely flexible graphite designed to increase shaft torque and spin. From the baseline, the VCORE 95, with its 62 flex, has great feel on contact. Full swings are rewarded with impressive accuracy, and there is enough mass in the hoop to get the ball moving through the court. Seasoned topspin players will find more than enough stroke speed and bite to bend and shape the ball’s trajectory with spin. At net, the VCORE 95 checks all the right boxes.

It has decent speed on reaction volleys while also offering just enough stability to redirect higher levels of pace – and the touch is spot-on. Finally, aggressive servers will find enough spin and control to work the corners of the service box with pace. With the 2018 VCORE 95 Yonex has produced a very impressive update. Players looking for a precise weapon with great feel should give this one a serious look.
